Dear [recipient’s name]: or To Whom it May Concern:
I am Samuel W. Micklus, the Executive Director of the Odyssey of the Mind (OM), the longest running International School Program that promotes creative problem solving and critical thinking. It is my pleasure to recommend OOO for admission to study arts at university. Each year OM competitions take place around the world and culminate with our annual World Finals.
I came to know OO as one of the representatives of the Republic of Korea at the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals in 2023. She is a student who stands out for her creativity, teamwork, and leadership. OO was successful in the Korean national tournament, and her behavior during the World Finals at Michigan State University has left a lasting impression. She also demonstrated a solid dedication to contributing to the community during World Finals.
As captain of Team OOOO, OO led her team to create and perform an 8-minute short play based on the "Problem 3 Classics: The Walls Of Troy." Many students find it challenging to design a complete and fresh performance, but not her. She crafted an eye-catching set, props, and costumes using her creativity and artistic skills. Based on her deep literary understanding of the Iliad and the Odyssey, she showed her fine art skills by hand-painting and collaging everything on the set. She also creatively integrated popular songs and choreographed performances to add excitement to the performance. OO showed her interest and passion in multidisciplinary arts and wanted to study multidisciplinary arts and stage design at university. With these talents and a multidisciplinary artistic sense, OO will contribute significantly to interdisciplinary art and set design within the university context.
OO is also deeply enthusiastic about leveraging her artistic talents to improve society. At our World Finals we conduct an “International Festival' that is designed to raise funds for national associations by selling souvenirs from each country to help pay their expenses. OO contacted the Korean Association a few weeks before the competition and proposed a fundraising project at the festival. Her project involved selling designed tumblers, with all proceeds dedicated to earthquake recovery efforts in Türkiye. Her small but dignified gesture moved everyone at headquarters. Her innovative and lofty idea furthered the noble ideals and principles of the Odyssey of the Mind.
As a result, the Korean Association organized a donation stand for her at our headquarters. OO took time out of her busy schedule during the World Finals to lead her team members in selling the 100 tumblers she had prepared. At first, sales seemed slow, but the team continued to promote in front of a large crowd, eventually selling all of them. Her donation project drew attention to the earthquake in Türkiye and made everyone feel proud of the donation. She raised $552 from the sales and donated a $500 scholarship she received from the competition, donating $1,052 to the Embassy in Türkiye. OO further developed the noble spirit and values of the Odyssey of the Mind.
Studying arts will be an excellent opportunity for OO to develop her talent and passion to serve society. Moreover, her artistic prowess and critical thinking skills will introduce fresh perspectives and be positive influences in the world of art.
